[Editor's Note] The Creaform Contest 2021, the first-ever reverse-engineering competition using 3D scanners, has concluded with a grand finale. Beyond a simple competition of reverse-engineering skills, the event also included equipment training, achieving a double benefit: fostering expert development and identifying partners to collaborate with Creaform on marketing initiatives in 2022. To this end, our magazine interviewed Hong Seung-hyun, the grand prize winner of the Creaform Contest 2021, to hear his thoughts on the competition.





■ Please introduce yourself and explain why you decided to participate.

My main job is 3D scanning and reverse engineering. I found out about the contest through an email from E4DS and decided to participate.

■ Please provide the topic and description of the final submission.

If you look at guitars and band instruments, there are many instruments that are decorated in various ways, but it is difficult to find such decorations in classical instruments.

A few years ago, I saw a poster with a picture of a violin on an overseas social media site, and after looking through dozens of related photos, I started thinking that I wanted to decorate my own violin like that.

I asked the company's designer to design a pattern for me, and he readily agreed, saying it would be an opportunity to expand his design field.

Once you have the pattern, it would be easiest to print it out and attach the sticker, unless you are hand painting it. However, since the violin body is curved, the sticker will warp.

I thought that among the modeling functions, I could solve the problem of stickers wrinkling by projecting the pattern onto the violin body and then printing and pasting the projected pattern.

■ I won the grand prize at the 'Creaform Contest 2021'. What are your thoughts?

During the reverse engineering of the violin, the surface modeling of the top scroll section was quite difficult. I would like to express my gratitude to Team Leader Kim Young-hui, who taught me even the details of surface modeling. And I would like to give credit to the company designer who is working on the design sketch and to my violin teacher, Jenny Yoon.

■ What are the advantages of the Peel 3D scanner and software used in the contest?

Since I use high-end products in my field, I felt regretful about the inherent limitations of the Peel 3D scanner as an optical scanner, but I think it has truly satisfactory performance in this price range.

I am positive about the 3D scanner market, as it seems to be at a point where high-quality products are starting to be distributed at low prices.

■ Future activity plans

Once the pattern design was complete, the designer said he would hand-draw it on my violin.

When I finish it, I plan to take it to a violin academy and show it off to promote it.
