Nokia and Nordic Semiconductor are collaborating to streamline licensing for IoT standard essential patents, aiming to provide a wide range of connected products and service benefits.


Nordic Semiconductor (Country Manager for Korea Choi Soo-chul) announced on the 15th that it has signed an agreement with Nokia regarding the use of Standard Essential Patents for Cellular IoT.

Accordingly, companies purchasing Nordic IoT hardware are provided with the opportunity to license Nokia's industry-leading cellular patent portfolio.

This new type of agreement, being conducted for the first time, can streamline and shorten the licensing process for standard essential patents, as well as enhance transparency and predictability for companies providing IoT products and services. Licenses can be used at the end device level, and companies can also continue licensing directly with Nokia.

Nokia has contributed to defining open standards by developing several underlying technologies used in almost all cellular devices and LTE-M and NB-IoT technologies. In fact, it can be considered that almost all devices connected to cellular networks automatically use Nokia's intellectual property (IP).

Kjetil Holstad, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Nordic Semiconductor, stated, “Nordic Semiconductor’s most important role is to enable customers to easily implement IoT. Through this agreement with Nokia, we are able to enhance the clarity and certainty that Nordic cellular IoT customers have sought over the past three to four years by adding transparency and predictability to the initial design process.”
