Samsung Electronics is contributing to reducing electricity consumption by linking data from Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to manage energy usage for not only home appliances but also the entire household.

Samsung Electronics signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Korea Electric Power Corporation on the 24th to promote a consortium for a pilot energy service project through the collection and utilization of apartment AMI data.

AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) is an intelligent remote metering device.

The business agreement signing ceremony held at the Samsung Digital Plaza Guseong branch on this day was attended by Park Chan-woo, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Home Appliances Division, and Kim Sook-cheol, Head of the Technology Innovation Division of Korea Electric Power Corporation.

This consortium aims to collect electricity data for each apartment unit and provide solutions that allow consumers to check and reduce their electricity usage in real time. P-S-Tech, a measuring instrument specialist, is also participating.

Through this agreement, Samsung Electronics will provide electricity data for each apartment unit provided by Korea Electric Power Corporation to the ‘SmartThings Energy’ service. The plan is to provide a more advanced energy management solution through linkage.

SmartThings Energy, the flagship service of Samsung's 'SmartThings Home Life', is a service that monitors the energy usage of home appliances in real time and, based on artificial intelligence (AI), controls air conditioners, washing machines, and other appliances into energy-saving mode when a preset progressive level is expected to be reached, enabling efficient energy management.

For example, by utilizing SmartThings Energy's 'AI Saving Mode', you can reduce the monthly power usage of Bespoke air conditioners, refrigerators, and washing machines/dryers released this year by up to 21%.

If Korea Electric Power Corporation's data is linked here, it will be possible to manage not only home appliances but also the total energy usage of each household, enabling more accurate progressive power consumption and progressive level prediction.

The consortium plans to select a pilot apartment complex where Samsung's 'SmartThings Home' solution will be applied within the first half of this year and install Korea Electric Power Corporation's AMI power meters in approximately 15,000 households first, with the goal of expanding the target households to a total of 3 million households in the future.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) in June of last year for the development of home energy solutions, and completed the linkage of KEPCO data to 7.7 million households by February of this year through an update to the SmartThings Energy service.

Park Chan-woo, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Home Appliances Business Division, said, “SmartThings Energy, which was first introduced in 2019, has established itself as a differentiated energy-saving solution,” and “Through this business agreement with KEPCO, we will provide a more advanced SmartThings Energy service experience to more consumers and participate in carbon reduction.”
