Domestic researchers have taken the first step toward securing core AI technologies by leading international standard policies in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced that since July of last year, it has taken the lead in establishing major AI-related groups and secured leadership positions through policy committee response activities at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T, JTC) and the World Standardization Organization (W3C).

The research team, selected as an 'AI Standards Expert Research Laboratory' by the Ministry of Science and ICT, led the establishment of AI groups at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T), including the AI Data Standards Working Group, the AI and Internet of Things (IoT) Focus Group for Digital Agriculture, and the AIoT Response Group, as well as the Federationed Learning Community Group at the World Wide Web of Nations (W3C), a de facto standardization organization.

The five-seat leadership team includes Lee Kang-chan, Head of the Intelligent Information Standards Research Lab at ETRI, Lee Seung-yoon, Head of the Open Source Center, Lee Won-seok, Senior Researcher, and Kim Seong-han, Principal Researcher.

Holding the presidency is advantageous when discussing standardization activities, as it allows for identifying agendas and proactively establishing standard concepts; therefore, assuming the presidency is crucial for setting the direction of standardization and tableIt is a factor that determines the success or failure of quasi-reignty.

ETRI stated that the operation of the 'Artificial Intelligence Standards Research Laboratory' will enable the comprehensive management of responses to policy committees of international and de facto standardization organizations in the AI field, which had previously been pursued individually in the context of technology and standard development.

Kang Shin-gak, Head of the Standards Research Division at ETRI, stated, “To secure a competitive edge in the race for AI technology hegemony, it is necessary to take the lead in international standardization of AI technology. We expect that the operation of the AI Standards Research Laboratory will serve as a catalyst for the internationalization and global expansion of domestic AI technology, as well as the creation of standard patents.”

Moving forward, ETRI plans to strengthen its leadership in the international standardization sector by operating the AI Standards Research Laboratory, engaging with policy committees at international and de facto standardization organizations, and developing artificial intelligence standards.

They announced that they ultimately plan to take the lead in developing international AI standards and secure core technologies based on this.
