Hyundai Motor Company projected that the total cost of ownership (TCO) of hydrogen-powered trucks would be comparable to that of diesel trucks within the next few years, highlighting their competitive edge in terms of economic efficiency. They cited the growing global consensus on the need to address climate change and the accelerating entry into and investment in the hydrogen economy as their rationale.

In July of last year, Hyundai Motor Company was selected as one of the final suppliers in the bidding for the 'California Port Eco-friendly Truck Introduction Project (NorCAL ZERO, Zero-Emission Regional and Drayage Operations with Fuel Cell Electric Trucks)' hosted by the 'California Air Resources Board (CARB)' and the 'California Energy Commission (CEC)'. Accordingly, a total of 30 Xcient hydrogen electric trucks are scheduled to be supplied starting in the second quarter of 2023.

“Hyundai Motor Company is leading the hydrogen electric vehicle market with the experience and expertise accumulated over decades,” said Jose Muñoz, President and Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor Company. “Our technological prowess, already proven in Korea and Europe, will serve as the foundation for the successful launch of hydrogen electric trucks in the North American market.”

In particular, President Muñoz stated, “Starting with the supply of Xcient hydrogen electric trucks to the California Ports Eco-friendly Truck Introduction Project (NorCAL ZERO), we will build a sustainable future and ultimately contribute to achieving North America’s carbon neutrality goals.”

During the expo, Hyundai Motor Company will display two detailed models—the Xcient hydrogen-electric tractor and the Xcient hydrogen-electric cargo truck—in both indoor and outdoor exhibition halls. Test-drive experiences will also be available to local media and industry representatives.
