With the recent increase in global power consumption, there is a growing demand for the efficient utilization of electricity. In particular, industrial equipment with high power consumption, such as home appliances and EV charging stations, requires not only high efficiency in power circuits but also a reduction in design load for noise countermeasures.

ROHM Semiconductor has developed the 4th generation Fast Recovery Diode (hereinafter FRD) 650V withstand voltage 'RFL / RFS series', which realizes Low VF, high-speed trr characteristics, and ultra-low noise characteristics for industrial and home appliances requiring a lot of power, such as air conditioners and EV charging stations.

The RFL / RFS series optimizes device structure and materials to simultaneously improve VF and trr performance, which are important characteristics of FRD that have a trade-off relationship. The RFL series, a low VF type, reduced VF by approximately 3.2% and trr by approximately 8.3% compared to the existing product (RFN series). The RFS series, a high trr type, reduced VF by approximately 17.9% compared to the existing product (RFUH series).

ROHM explained that with these two series lineups, they contribute to increasing power efficiency through optimal design according to the application of the power circuit. It was added that it can be applied to applications such as PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuits for air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, etc., secondary rectification circuits for EV charging stations, inverter circuits for robots, compressors, etc., and various power devices for servers, base stations, etc.

In addition, compared to standard products, it achieves ultra-low noise during switching OFF, contributing to the reduction of noise countermeasure components and the alleviation of design load.

Recently, mass production of both series began with a production capacity of 100,000 units per month, and they have been released on online parts distribution sites.

ROHM stated, “We will continue to expand the package lineup of the RFL/RFS series and support the automotive sector to broaden the range of applicable applications and further contribute to lower power consumption.”

ROHM explained the significance of the product launch by stating that it has developed a new product that simultaneously achieves Low VF characteristics capable of operating with even higher efficiency and high-speed trr characteristics with reduced loss when switching OFF, and realizes ultra-low noise characteristics when switching OFF.
