The Korean Institute of Power Electronics (Chairman Taek-ki Lee, KIPE) successfully held its first academic conference as a face-to-face event after two years of online conferences due to COVID-19, thanks to the enthusiastic response from industry, academia, and research.

The Korean Institute of Power Electronics held its 2022 Summer Conference at Hanwha Resort in Gyeongju from July 5 to 7.


At this three-day academic conference, 252 carefully selected papers were presented, and industrial technology sessions and IE competitions were also held, providing a rich forum for academic and technical exchange.

Outside the lecture hall, 29 participating companies filled the exhibition booths.


At the opening ceremony, Professor Toshihisa Shimizu of Tokyo Metropolitan University from Japan presented on ‘Future Perspective of Electronics’. Professor Shimizu said that with the increase in renewable energy and energy usage, next-generation power devices are changing, and introduced technologies to improve the performance of power semiconductors, power supplies with small and medium capacities, and related R&D such as solid AI capacitors.

Next, Professor Bo-Jang from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China gave an online presentation on 'Trends in Power Semiconductor Devices', and presented on power semiconductor products with high power density, as well as SiC and GaN semiconductors.

Professor Heo Jin of Incheon National University also presented on 'Fault Diagnosis of PM Motor Systems' and 'Robust Design of PM Motor Systems'. Professor Heo Jin stated that as the use of motors increases, they have changed from auxiliary power sources to primary power sources, and that we have entered an era where motor failures can immediately lead to dangerous situations. Professor Heo Jin presented a fault detection and fault diagnosis method for predicting motor failures and a fault determination method using deep learning.

At the opening ceremony, the Jeong Yeon-taek Academic Award was presented to Professor Cho Young-hoon of Konkuk University, and the Baek Hyun-sang Award was presented to Professor Lee Il-woon of Myongji University.





The core of the conference was the various academic sessions, which were held over the three-day event, including: △Electric motor control △Electric vehicle charger △Battery application △Inverter control △Converter application △BMS algorithm, etc.





In this academic conference, in addition to the presentation of 252 papers by society members, the participation of domestic female power electronics engineers also shined.

Through the 'Woman Power Electronics Engineer Exchange', female engineers from industry and research gave academic presentations.

Also, graduate students The 19th IE Competition, a creativity competition, was also held.

This event was held with the aim of encouraging the development of new technologies and engineering creativity and a desire for achievement by designing and operating systems closely related to industrial sites in the fields of power electronics engineering as well as robotics, automation, and communication technologies. It was divided into a designated work section related to the green energy-based power electronics system field and a free work section exhibiting works in various application fields based on power electronics engineering, and participants showed off their passion for engineering here.

This academic conference had a high level of participation from industry.

The special session on the latest power electronics technology for EVs hosted by Hyundai Motor Company introduced the latest power electronics technology applied to the Ioniq 5 electric vehicle.

In addition, we had time to share the technology development and research results of researchers in industrial companies through an industrial technology session in which LG Innotek, Infineon, Mathworks Korea, Winik P&E, and the Korea Semiconductor Research Association participated.

The Power Electronics Conference corporate exhibition, which has developed every year, had the highest participation rate this year with 29 companies participating.

This year, Withbeer, Hioki Korea, FLIR Systems Korea, QIT, Teledyne LeCroy, Mirim Syscon, EMSIS, GMJECO, Rigol Korea, Acetech, Zenpro, Trino Technology, LG Electronics, Integratec, Realtime Wave, Moasoft, Wonik P&E, KTM Technology, Emco Electronics, Asung, Wison Technology, Jeju International Convention Center, Core Electric, Biobi Enterprise, Dabo Corporation, Energy and Sensor, Keysight Technologies, Semipowerex, and Adelphia Lab participated and exhibited related products.





The exhibition was packed with academics and participants.

In addition, the Korea Power Electronics Institute and the Korea Software Copyright Association signed an MOU as a side event to help create an environment for genuine software use.

Lee Taek-ki, the president of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, said, “The Korean Institute of Power Electronics has adopted the 3S of ‘Service, Support, and Succeed’ as its motto since last year,” and added, “I hope that academia will support and resolve the difficulties faced by the industry and that industry, academia, and research institutes will pursue development through exchanges and cooperation.”
