In the first quarter of 2022, the Electronic System Design (ESD) industry recorded double-digit growth compared to the previous year, driven by the growth of PCBs, multi-chip modules, and semiconductor intellectual property rights.

According to the latest ESD industry report by the ESD Alliance, a technology community of SEMI, an industry association representing the global electronics industry, revenue in the Electronic System Design (ESD) industry in the first quarter of 2022 was $3.5405 billion, a 12.1% increase from $3.1577 billion in the same period of the previous year.

Walden C., CEO of Cornami Lines stated, “In the first quarter of 2022, revenue exceeded $3.5 billion, showing double-digit growth, and by product category, growth was seen in computer-aided engineering, printed circuit boards, multi-chip modules, semiconductor intellectual property, and services,” adding, “Geographically, revenue increased in the U.S., Japan, and the Asia-Pacific region.”

The total number of employees at all companies tracked by the ESD industry report was 51,328 as of the first quarter of 2022, an increase of 4.7% from 49,024 in the first quarter of 2021.

It also represents a 0.2% increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

According to the updated report, an examination of key categories and regional data for the first quarter of 2022 reveals the following: Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) recorded $1.1182 billion, a 14.8% increase year-on-year; IC Physical Design and Verification recorded $631.2 million, a 7.5% decrease year-on-year; Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module recorded $293.3 million, a 1.4% increase year-on-year; Semiconductor Intellectual Property recorded $1.3765 billion, a 23.7% increase year-on-year; and the services sector, encompassing consulting and education, recorded $121.4 million, a 22.7% increase year-on-year.

By region, the Americas recorded $1.5227 billion, an 18.5% increase year-on-year; Europe, the Middle East, and Africa recorded $4.341 billion, a 3% decrease year-on-year; Japan recorded $263.5 million, a 1.8% increase year-on-year; and the Asia-Pacific region recorded $1.3203 billion, a 13.2% increase year-on-year.
