Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the Ioniq 6, a mid-size electric sedan and the successor to the Ioniq 5, for the first time.

Hyundai Motor Company exhibited and unveiled the actual Ioniq 6 at the 2022 Busan International Motor Show Press Day held at BEXCO in Busan on the 14th.

Hyundai Motor President Jang Jae-hoon stated, “As the second model to inherit the direction of the Ioniq brand, the Ioniq 6 will offer a fresh direction as a more attractive product to the domestic electric vehicle market, which has been centered on SUVs and hatchbacks,” adding, “The Ioniq 6 aims to deliver an electrified experience that is differentiated from existing vehicles through the driver’s flexible use of space.”

The Ioniq 6 is the second model to use Hyundai Motor’s dedicated electric vehicle platform E-GMP, following the Ioniq 5 which was successfully launched last year.

Both models use the same platform, but there are differences in specifications.

While the Ioniq 5 is a compact SUV, the Ioniq 6 is classified as a mid-size sedan.

The length of the Ioniq 6 is 4,855mm, which is 220mm longer than the Ioniq 5. The width is 1,880mm, which is 10mm narrower, and the height is 1,495mm, which is 110mm lower.

Since it uses the same platform, it shares the same long wheelbase. It is interpreted that the Ioniq 6 maximizes interior space because its dimensions are similar to the Sonata, while its wheelbase is similar to the Grandeur.

The motor standard on the rear wheels of the Ioniq 6 has a maximum output of 168 kW and a maximum torque of 350 Nm, and depending on the trim, a 74 kW front motor can be added to select an all-wheel drive system.

In all-wheel drive, it achieves a maximum output of 239 kW and 605 Nm of torque, marking a 0-100 km/h time of 5.1 seconds.

One of the biggest improvements compared to the Ioniq 5 is the driving range.

The battery capacity of the existing Ioniq 5 Long Range model is 72.6 kWh, providing a maximum driving range of 429 km, whereas the Ioniq 6 Long Range model can travel 524 km with a 77.4 kWh battery.

It also boasts the world's highest fuel efficiency of 6.2 km/kWh based on the standard rear-wheel drive model.

The new design type, the Electrified Streamliner, also played a part in the reason for achieving the maximum driving range and the world's best fuel efficiency.

Inspired by the concept car Prophecy, the Electricfied Streamliner combines psychological beauty and functional efficiency through its aerodynamic streamlined silhouette.Maximized in the poem.

Along with a streamlined silhouette, a wide range of aerodynamic technologies were applied to maximize aerodynamic performance, including a rear spoiler, external active air flaps, wheel air curtains, wheel gap reducers, stripping traps, wheel deflectors, and optimized underbody shapes, achieving the best drag coefficient of 0.21 in Hyundai Motor Company.

Driving and parking assistance systems have also been applied.

The Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) and Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) applied to the Ioniq 6 temporarily reduce the vehicle's speed according to road conditions, such as speed limit zones or curves, when driving on highways or expressways, and assist in safe and convenient driving by helping to change lanes with just the operation of the turn signal switch or responding to vehicles cutting in at close range during traffic jams.

In addition, equipped with Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2), it assists with remote parking and exiting, including remote forward and reverse movement, from outside the vehicle using a smart key, and recognizes surrounding vehicles and parking guide lines to support not only conventional parallel and perpendicular parking but also diagonal parking.

Yu Won-hwa, Vice President of Hyundai Motor, stated, “The target sales volume for the Ioniq 6 this year is 12,000 units, and pre-orders will begin on July 28,” adding, “The sales price ranges from 55 million won to 65 million won, prior to reflecting electric vehicle tax benefits.”
