Xcient Hydrogen Electric Truck Proves Excellence… Aims to Strengthen Position in German and European Markets

Hyundai Motor’s XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen electric truck has confirmed its entry into Germany, Europe’s largest commercial vehicle market, and is actively targeting the German market.

Hyundai Motor Company announced on Tuesday, the 2nd, that it recently agreed to supply 27 Xcient hydrogen electric trucks to seven German companies in logistics, manufacturing, and other sectors.

This is the second export to Europe, following the delivery of 47 units to 23 companies in Switzerland from 2020 to June 2022.

This supply contract was made possible through the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV)'s subsidy policy for eco-friendly commercial vehicles, after seven companies applied to the BMDV for subsidies for Hyundai Motor's Xcient hydrogen electric truck and received final approval.

Recently, the German government has shown a move to expand the adoption of eco-friendly commercial vehicles and has introduced a policy providing subsidies to companies purchasing these vehicles and infrastructure operators, such as charging stations.

In this process, each company was instructed to select and support target vehicles.

In line with the German government's moves, Hyundai Motor established 'Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility Germany GmbH (hereinafter HHMG),' a specialized sales subsidiary for hydrogen commercial vehicles, last April and has been actively promoting the excellence of the Xcient hydrogen electric truck to companies in Germany.

As a result, seven final companies selected Hyundai Motor Company as their partner and participated in the subsidy bidding, and all seven companies received subsidy benefits.

The Xcient hydrogen electric truck to be supplied by Hyundai Motor Company is a heavy cargo truck with a gross weight of 42 tons (including trailer weight), equipped with a 180kW hydrogen fuel cell system consisting of two hydrogen fuel cells and a 350kW drive motor, capable of driving up to 400km on a single charge.

Hyundai Motor plans to actively target the German hydrogen commercial vehicle market with the supply of the Xcient hydrogen electric truck.

The goal is to expand the hydrogen ecosystem within Germany by strengthening promotional activities targeting various operators centered on HHMG and establishing service networks.

"We expect that this supply contract for the Xcient hydrogen electric truck will strengthen Hyundai Motor's position in Germany," said Mark Freymueller, Executive Vice President and Head of Commercial Vehicle Innovation at Hyundai Motor. "Hyundai Motor will successfully support the German government's goal of carbon neutrality and, based on this, will actively strive to expand its business into the European market."

Hyundai Motor plans to expand its supply sources for Xcient hydrogen electric trucks to other European countries, including Austria, Denmark, France, and the Netherlands, following Switzerland and Germany.
