5G, nuclear power plant safety management, etc. to be expanded nationwide

The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Lee Jong-ho) announced on the 28th that it completed the supply of 5G frequencies (including registration as a basic telecommunications service provider for Newgens) to Newgens (CEO Lim Young-pil), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (President Hwang Joo-ho), SK Networks Service (CEO Kim Yoon-ui), and UNZEL (CEO Yoo Ji-won).
The Ministry of Science and ICT is promoting the nationwide expansion of 5G as part of follow-up measures to build an innovation network for the ‘Digital Strategy of the Republic of Korea.’
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Corporation, Newzens, SK Networks Service, and UN Angel, which received the frequency this time, plan to apply Ieum 5G in the fields of nuclear power plant safety, culture, logistics, and R&D, and provide services not only in Seoul but also in Changwon, Iksan, Uljin, and other areas nationwide.
With this supply of 5G frequencies, the number of businesses that have been allocated 5G frequencies has increased to 9, and 6 organizations have been designated for 5G frequencies.
The Ministry of Science and ICT has decided to supply the entire applied frequency band of 4.7 GHz and 28 GHz to provide services such as nuclear power plant safety management and disaster response communication network utilization, real-world amusement equipment experience based on motion sensing technology, robot-based logistics operation, robot inspection, and in-house intranet through this 5G frequency supply.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power will double its network to automatically switch to a 5G network in the event of a wired network failure, such as a fire, in order to utilize the communication network for nuclear power plant safety management and disaster response, and will respond quickly with a VR on-site situation relay service using high-definition video and AI analysis optimized for nuclear power plant on-site conditions in the event of a disaster.
In addition, Newzens is pursuing the goal of providing customers with immersive and experiential services identical to those on site by utilizing 28 GHz band 5G technology to transmit real-time, large-capacity video and motion data of amusement facilities that was impossible with existing Wi-Fi.
Park Yoon-gyu, Second Vice Minister of Science and ICT, said, “This frequency supply is significant in that it aims to solve the problem of experiencing real-world amusement facilities that could not be solved with existing communication technologies with Ieum 5G, and Ieum 5G is being fully utilized in local areas in areas such as nuclear power plant safety and logistics.” He added, “The government will actively promote public-private communication such as disseminating best practices at home and abroad and continuously improving the system so that Ieum 5G can fully expand.”

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.

ETRI Develops 200Gbps Photodetector… Initiates Localization of Optical Receivers for AI Data Centers
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has developed a photodetector device that processes optical signals of approximately 200Gbps per channel for the first time in Korea. This device is a component that converts optical signals into electrical signals and determines the reception performance of AI data centers and 5G/6G communication networks. ETRI achieved bandwidth of 70GHz or higher and optical responsivity of 0.75A/W or higher, and integrated an indium phosphide lens on the rear of the chip to enhance optical reception efficiency and alignment convenience. The technology was presented at OECC 2025 and was recently published in the international academic journal 'Optics Express'.

SKT and Ericsson Expand Joint Research on AI Networks… Preparing for 6G Beyond 5G Advancement
SK Telecom and Ericsson are expanding AI-based mobile network collaboration. On the 19th, the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding covering 5G advancement through 6G standardization, and agreed to undertake joint research and verification in the areas of AI-RAN, open and autonomous networks, security, and future communication technologies. SKT Receives International Standard for AI Data Center Interconnection Structure… Establishes Operating System Standards
SK Telecom's proposed AI data center interworking architecture has received final approval as an international standard at the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) conference. The core of this standard is the classification of AI data centers into three layers—service, management, and infrastructure—and the organization of signaling requirements between layers. As AI service proliferation increases the importance of interworking among various systems within data centers such as computation, power, cooling, storage, and security, this standard is significant in that it presents a common architecture for operations and service delivery. SK Telecom stated that it initiated the relevant standardization project in 2024 and achieved this approval following approximately two years of discussion.
