Supports the power and data connection terminals of various small electronic products by establishing the USB-C national standard.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's National Agency for Technology and Standards (President Lee Sang-hoon) established three national standards on November 29 to integrate the connection terminals used in electronic products such as mobile phones, tablet PCs, and portable speakers into the USB-C terminal, and published application guidelines to help companies utilize the USB-C terminal in their popularization.

In addition, to expand the application of USB-C terminals, the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards simultaneously held a 'Power/Data Connection (USB-C) Standard Corporate Briefing Session' at the Yangjae aT Center on November 30th, with approximately 50 people in attendance, including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and other companies and consumer groups.

The briefing session on that day introduced the national standards for USB-C terminals and guidelines that companies can use for product design and evaluation.

The national standard is based on the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard and consists of three types: △USB-C cable and connector shape standard (KSCIEC62680-1-3), △USB power transmission method standard (KSCIEC62680-1-2), and △External power supply interoperability and communication method standard (KSCIEC63002).

In order to reflect the recent trend of expanding the power supply capacity range of international standards (IEC) to match the diversification of products using USB-C terminals, a plan to expand the power supply capacity of national standards from the current 100W to a maximum of 240W was discussed.

The corporate application guidelines provide requirements for functional assessments that companies should review when applying products and for electrical safety for each major product group.It contains one requirement.

The introduction status in overseas countries such as the European Union, the status of international standardization, and trends in products applicable to USB-C terminals were also introduced.

The Korea Agency for Technology and Standards held a meeting with manufacturers, consumer groups, and other attendees along with the briefing session, and the companies agreed to expand the introduction of USB-C terminals.

Lee Sang-hoon, president of the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards, said, “Standardization of power and data connections is an achievement that we have achieved together with companies, and it will not only contribute to environmental protection through the reduction of electronic waste, but also to improving product quality and consumer convenience.” He added, “We will support domestic companies to secure industrial competitiveness by utilizing standards, and consumers to easily select and use products with USB-C terminals.”
