Nordic Semiconductor (Country Manager for Korea Choi Soo-chul) has joined the DECT Forum as a full member and is taking the lead in adopting DECT NR+, a new standard that enables enterprise IoT customers to implement massive IoT networks at a low cost.


Nordic announced on the 20th that it has become a full member of the DECT Forum, which is leading the development of the industry standard DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) and the adoption of the latest standard DECT NR+ (New Radio+).

DECT NR+ from the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is the world's first non-cellular 5G wireless standard designed to support high-density massive IoT with up to one million devices deployed per square kilometer.

DECT NR+ enables the realization of applications such as mMTC (massive Machine Type Communication) and URLLC (Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication) through a scalable, large-scale private network.

This standard can support large-scale point-to-point, star, and mesh topologies, and enables distributed applications such as asset tracking, smart cities, and smart energy projects. It is also possible to connect with many individual networks.

Nordic has played a key role in the development of the DECT NR+ standard since the specification was first announced in July 2020.

This standard guarantees 99.99% reliability because the functionality is built into the lower layer ('stack') of the RF protocol.

At the time this specification was released, Nordic participated as a major developer for the stack's physical layer (PHY) and a core developer for the Media Access (MAC) layer.

Nordic continues to play a coordinating role for the PHY layer.

Kristian Sæther, Director of Cellular IoT and NR+ Products at Nordic Semiconductor, joins the DECT Forum Board of Directors as a member.

In addition, Nordic has joined the DECT NR+ Working Group, a marketing working group of the DECT Forum, and plans to participate in other key working groups for NR+.

Director Christian Seder stated, “Nordic believes it can realize IoT for the broadest possible audience. Our strategy is to support IoT technologies capable of meeting the widest range of applications, as well as to implement based on open standards and precise technical specifications.” “DECT NR+ perfectly aligns with these goals,” he stated.

Along with this, they added, “Nordic has joined the DECT Forum based on the performance of market-proven DECT technology, and is currently joining forces to build and realize the same success in DECT NR+.”

Earlier this year, Nordic and Wirepass, a company specializing in massive IoT solution software, showcased a demo of DECT NR+ and Wirepass's '5G Mesh' stack running on Nordic's nRF91 SiP.

This demo demonstrated that the protocol can be used with existing hardware. According to the DECT Forum, commercial solutions are expected to be released as early as the first half of 2023. WirePass has also joined the DECT Forum as a full member.
