The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced its 2023 new year research and management plan on the 2nd.

The main goal is to secure strategic and fundamental technologies in the information and communications sector, and to lead the way in technology by discovering international standard technologies and expanding support for industrialization, thereby achieving technological innovation as a national growth engine.

ETRI focuses its research capabilities on the following areas to secure strategic and core technologies: 5G+·6G communication infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI)·software (SW), metaverse, cybersecurity, system semiconductors, and new devices/materials.

In terms of the direction of research and development in the ICT field, AI/machine learning (ML), SW, and component/material technologies will be continuously researched and developed as basic technologies.

System semiconductors will be developed to enhance synergy with the development of relevant systems, and AI semiconductors will be developed as general-purpose semiconductors.

We are also actively pursuing the integration of ICT capabilities with other industries. We are committed to addressing national and societal issues that the public can experience through digital innovations in areas such as intelligent mobility (autonomous driving), national defense, energy, healthcare, and safety.

We also strive for ESG management innovation through organizational innovation, solving social problems, and cooperation between industry, academia, and research institutes. As a partner in creating a happy future world, we have set forth as our main management goals not only the resolution of social problems, but also the strengthening of research ethics, carbon neutrality, passionate and creative innovation of research environment, and win-win management between industry, academia, and research institutes.

The need for a stable research environment to contribute to the creation of large-scale achievements and industrial development was also not left out.

Meanwhile, ETRI announced eight representative technologies for 2022 along with its New Year's message to encourage excellence and creation and to publicize ETRI's R&D excellence.

The grand prize went to "Next-Generation Lithium Secondary Battery Core Materials and Process Technology for Electric Vehicles," led by Dr. Lee Young-ki of the Intelligent Sensor Lab. The top prizes went to Silicon Photonics (Director Lee Jun-ki) and the Multi-AI Vaccine Platform (Chief Technology Officer Kim Jong-hyun).

In addition, the Excellence Awards went to: △Media Encoding and Transmission Source Technology (Director Taejin Lee), △Open Base Station Wireless Device Commercial Technology (Director Moonsik Lee), △Digital X-ray Tube (Research Fellow Yunho Song), △Reading AI Teacher Source Technology (Director Yungeun Lee), △Investigation of the Effects of 5G/+a Electromagnetic Waves on the Human Body (Principal Researcher Hyeongdo Choi).

ETRI President Seung-chan Bang said, "I hope 2023 will be the first year in which ETRI's pride and self-esteem will once again shine brightly around the world. We will all work together to create a 'research institute beloved by the public.'"
