Boeing is accelerating the development of next-generation operating systems for its diverse product lines, including commercial aircraft, urban air mobility (UAM), and spacecraft.

Boeing announced on the 12th that, following years of strategic efforts, it is embarking on the joint development of its own Linux platform for commercial aircraft and spacecraft.

In addition, Boeing is recruiting software engineers specializing in embedded systems and system programming at the Boeing Korea Technology Center (BKETC) in Seoul for joint development.

Boeing Linux runs on the latest Linux kernel, which has been tuned and verified for application in safety-critical applications.

It implements a real-time operating system optimized to meet high-performance requirements and additionally introduces features that support standard interfaces for avionics applications.

Dylan Jones, Director of the BKETC Research Center, stated, “This is a very exciting opportunity for Korean software engineers to participate in globally influential aerospace projects,” adding, “Our center will once again demonstrate Korea’s technological capabilities on the world stage by providing innovative technologies for future air mobility while maintaining quality and airworthiness.”

The Boeing Linux distribution can be used with Boeing's various aerospace-related product families. In particular, it is expected to be a significant turning point in the application of open source software to safety-critical applications for aircraft.

As Boeing's core research hub, BKETC collaborates with world-class partners for strategic technology research in areas such as autonomous flight, artificial intelligence, avionics, embedded software, Linux, mobility platforms, smart cabins, and smart factories. BKETC is Boeing's 12th global research center and is located in the ASEM Tower in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
