Experts from industry, academia, and research gathered together to lay the foundation for empirical research on extreme materials.

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Lee Jeong-hwan), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), held a ceremony to launch the Extreme Materials Evidence Research Infrastructure Promotion Team and unveil a plaque at the KIMS headquarters on the 29th, along with a meeting of industry, academia, and research experts, regarding the "Extreme Materials Evidence Research Infrastructure Promotion Project."

At the event, Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho and other key officials attended and listened to the plan to establish a foundation for research on extreme materials.

The 'Extreme Materials Demonstration Research Base Creation Project' is a project to establish a foundation for demonstration research, including testing and evaluation, and pilot production, for the development of 'promising future materials' such as ultra-high temperatures, ultra-low temperatures, and specific extreme temperatures.

The purpose of this national strategy is to overcome the technological gap in extreme materials and secure leading technologies. With the goal of strengthening technological competitiveness in cutting-edge fields such as hydrogen, shipbuilding, and marine, a total of KRW 309.7 billion will be invested from 2023 to 2028 to support demonstration R&D projects for the domestic production of extreme materials.

At the event, the plan to establish a foundation for empirical research on extreme materials was heard and discussed, and much was said about the expected effects related to the technological independence and technological leadership of key items in the field of extreme materials.

Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho, who attended the event that day, said, “The Extreme Materials Demonstration Research Infrastructure Development Project will be an opportunity to strengthen our country’s extreme materials demonstration research capabilities and establish a bridgehead to secure technological competitiveness.” He added, “To this end, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to continuously promote the establishment of a demonstration infrastructure cooperation system to establish a foundation for extreme materials demonstration research, linking the results of demonstration research to commercialization, and discovering demand for extreme materials research and development.”

Lee Jeong-hwan, president of the Korea Materials Research Institute, said, “For the successful commercialization of extreme materials technology, empirical research simulating real-world environments is essential.” He added, “We are well aware that the source of competitiveness in small and medium-sized businesses comes from challenging and growing in extreme environments, and we will do our best to ensure that the project proceeds without a hitch.”
