Industry, academia, and research experts have gathered to discuss the construction plan for the 'Korean Advanced Semiconductor Technology Center'.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy (Minister Lee Chang-yang) held an industry-academia-research roundtable on the 13th at the Semiconductor Industry Association in Pangyo to discuss the establishment of the 'Korean Advanced Semiconductor Technology Center'.

This roundtable was held as a follow-up measure to the 'National Advanced Industry Development Strategy' announced on March 15th, and was convened to gather opinions from domestic and international industry, academia, and research experts and build consensus regarding the construction of a technology center that will serve as a hub for semiconductor advanced processes and materials and parts technology development.

Approximately 20 participants attended, including device companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, domestic materials and parts companies including Wonik IPS, Dongjin Semichem, and Hanamicron, global materials and parts companies such as Lam Research, AMAT, ASML, and TEL, as well as experts from academia and research institutes.

The technology center plans to perform functions including consolidating advanced semiconductor process infrastructure and establishing mid to long-term semiconductor product and technology roadmaps to provide direction for semiconductor industry development, supporting process and product technology development and performance evaluation at IMEC level for device companies and materials and parts companies, and fostering semiconductor specialized human resources.

The roundtable discussed the construction plan for the technology center, efficient operational methods to support advanced semiconductor technology development and product evaluation for materials and parts companies, and private participation revenue generation plans for sustained operation of the technology center.

Going forward, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy plans to continue consultations with domestic and international industry, academia, and research experts to prepare for the technology center to be established as a global hub for advanced semiconductor technology development.

The Director of the Industrial Policy Bureau at the Ministry stated, "We hope the Korean Advanced Semiconductor Technology Center can be utilized as a world-class advanced semiconductor technology development center and a platform for semiconductor technology, infrastructure, and human resources exchange," and added, "The government will make active efforts to build a domestic advanced semiconductor research and development (R&D) ecosystem."
