STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor company supporting a wide range of electronic applications and customers, supports space savings and efficiency improvements in consumer and industrial applications through the launch of a new VIPerGaN converter.

ST announced on the 20th that it has expanded its family of high-voltage wide-bandgap power converters by releasing the VIPerGaN100 and VIPerGaN65, which support single-switch quasi-resonant (QR) flyback converters of up to 100W and 65W.

These devices are suitable for switching mode power supplies (SMPS) in USB-PD chargers, home appliances, smart building controllers, lighting, HVAC systems, smart metering, and other industrial applications due to their compact and highly integrated design.

Each device integrates a Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) controller and a 650V Enhancement-Mode GaN (eGaN) power transistor, and can perform secondary regulation using a standard optocoupler.

Advanced features are integrated into a small footprint of a 5 mm x 6 mm QFN package, ensuring excellent power density and reducing the Bill of Materials (BoM). Wide bandgap transistor technology increases energy efficiency and simplifies thermal management.

This converter consumes less than 30 mW of standby power during adaptive burst mode operation with advanced power management and low standby current performance.

Each device operates in a quasi-resonant mode through dynamic blanking time and valley synchronization, thereby reducing switching losses and maximizing efficiency under all input line and load conditions.

This allows for reducing energy consumption while meeting eco-friendly requirements in accordance with global energy conservation and carbon neutrality goals.

In addition, it is equipped with built-in features that ensure safety and reliability, such as input voltage feedforward compensation to minimize peak power fluctuations, output overvoltage protection, current sensing, input overvoltage protection, and brown-in and brown-out protection. It also features frequency jittering to suppress EMI, as well as an overheating cutoff function.

VIPerGaN100 and VIPerGaN65 are currently being produced in 5mm x 6mm QFN packages. The price is $2.93 for VIPerGaN100 and $2.62 for VIPerGaN65 when purchasing 1,000 units.
