Hanwha Systems (CEO Eoh Seong-cheol) and Jeju Province (Governor Oh Young-hoon) have joined hands to establish a private space industry cluster encompassing satellite development, manufacturing, services, and astronaut training.

Hanwha Systems announced on the 6th that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province to foster the private space industry in Jeju.

Starting with this agreement, Hanwha Systems and Jeju Province plan to establish an organic cooperation system to foster a private space industry ecosystem, including: establishing J-Space governance and creating a Jeju space industry ecosystem; building infrastructure for private satellite development and manufacturing; activating satellite information services; and promoting space industry workforce training programs.

Hanwha Systems aims to begin construction of the 'Hanwha Space Center,' a satellite development and manufacturing facility, within this year as its first collaboration with Jeju Island to establish a space industry value chain.

Hanwha Systems plans to establish an AIT (Assembly, Integration, Test) facility to secure a production base capable of developing and manufacturing small satellites under private sector leadership. Furthermore, we intend to continuously strengthen our satellite development and manufacturing capabilities to actively seek export opportunities not only for the domestic market but also for countries that do not possess satellites.

Hanwha Systems plans to expand its space business to include privately-led satellite imagery and communication services by establishing a ground station within the Hanwha Space Center.

We also plan to focus on revitalizing value-added industries utilizing satellite data by collaborating with local companies, including environmental monitoring of land, water, and forest resources through high-resolution satellite image analysis, data analysis for GIS (Geographic Information System) map design, location-based services (LBS) necessary for autonomous driving and smart city construction, financial services such as the collection, analysis, and encryption of financial transaction data using satellite communication, and image fusion services that maximize the reliability and efficiency of information by automatically fusing and analyzing image information from each satellite.

Hanwha Systems is implementing the 'Little Star Project,' a customized space workforce training program for different age groups, to prioritize local recruitment in Jeju Island for space industry-related fields, including AIT specialists.

Last April, it served as a sponsor for the science talk concert 'Little Star Project: The Road to Space,' which was hosted and organized by the Aerospace Industry Promotion Association, Korea Aerospace Youth Corps, EBS Media, Jeju National University, and the Air Mobility Convergence Research Center, and sponsored by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education, successfully attracting the participation of about 400 elementary and middle school students in the province.

Following this, the 'Visiting Space Special Lecture' was conducted to provide elementary and middle school students in the province with the opportunity to meet space experts in person, and in the second half of the year, space-related career education and space science education content We plan to expand education, including production. We are also planning full-scale practical space industry training and employment-linked education for university students in the province by utilizing RIS programs.

Eo Seong-cheol, CEO of Hanwha Systems, expressed his aspirations, stating, “Hanwha Systems will establish a space industry outpost on Jeju Island and cooperate with small but strong companies in various fields to help Jeju become a hub for the private space industry.” He added, “We will grow into a global space company by contributing to strengthening the competitiveness of the domestic space industry through the cultivation of talent and workforce development to lead the future space industry.”
