The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Lee Jeong-hwan), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, is actively engaging in systematic scientific investigations into the analysis of material defects in the event of major industrial accidents in Korea.

On the 10th, the Korea Institute of Materials Science signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding to Contribute to Reducing Major Industrial Accidents in Korea' with the National Forensic Service (Director Park Nam-gyu).

Through this agreement, both organizations pledged to actively cooperate on research aimed at more systematically analyzing the material damage mechanisms of major accidents in the field of legal safety.

The National Forensic Service is a national agency under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety that performs examinations and interpretations necessary for criminal investigations and determining the causes of incidents and accidents, as well as various studies, analyses, and training for scientific criminal investigations.

Since its establishment in 1955, it has been an expert research institution playing a part in scientific investigation. It has conducted expert analysis in various criminal investigation cases for investigative agencies at all levels, such as the police and prosecution, as well as public institutions like courts. It has also contributed significantly to the scientific advancement of investigation by conducting experimental research and educational activities to secure scientific evidence.

Through this MOU, both institutions will work together to foster experts in material analysis and evaluation in the field of legal safety and to strengthen mutual research capabilities.

Specifically, △material analysis/evaluation to identify accident mechanisms when necessary during the response to major accidents. Mutual cooperation includes sharing human and material resources and promoting joint research to strengthen mutual research capabilities regarding legal safety and major industrial accidents.

Lee Jeong-hwan, President of the Korea Institute of Materials Science, said, “The purpose of signing this agreement is to more scientifically identify the cause mechanisms of accidents when industrial fires and various other accidents occur,” adding, “I hope that the two organizations will cooperate well in the future to contribute, even if only a little, to reducing major industrial accidents in Korea.”
