The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has been recognized for its contributions to excellent patent management and creation of excellent patents.

ETRI announced on the 26th that it was selected as an 'Excellent Intellectual Property Management Organization' by the Korean Intellectual Property Office in recognition of its outstanding performance in all areas of intellectual property management, including the creation and utilization of intellectual property rights.


At the '2023 Inter-Ministry Public Technology Transfer and Commercialization Roadshow' held at Yonsei University on the 12th, the research institute achieved the feat of being selected as an excellent intellectual property management institution for the second consecutive year, the only one among the award-winning institutions since 2020.

The Intellectual Property Management Excellence Institution is an award system newly established by the Korean Intellectual Property Office in 2020 to encourage profit-oriented intellectual property management.

This award is given to universities and research institutes that have achieved excellent results in overall intellectual property management over the past three years.

With this award, ETRI will receive intellectual property points worth approximately 800 million won from the Korean Intellectual Property Office, equivalent to 40% of patent fees for the next three years.

Since ETRI was the first government-funded research institute to introduce a researcher-level patent strategy in 2004, it has established the 5th intellectual property (IP) management strategy. We are continuing to pursue global IP management.

In order to create and utilize excellent intellectual property rights, we are continuously carrying out activities such as ▲discovering core original patents ▲self-analyzing owned patents ▲patent licensing ▲international standard patent pool activities.

In addition, ETRI was selected as the world's leading research institute for 4th Industrial Revolution patents by the European Patent Office in 2020.

In addition, in 2021, the company achieved the feat of ranking 5th in the world in securing standard patents from the three major international standardization organizations (ISO/IEC/ITU) hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office.

The institute became the first public research institute to achieve a cumulative technology fee of 1 trillion won in 2021.

ETRI’s Shin Jeong-hyeok, head of the business division, said, “As a government-funded research institute, I am very proud that we have been consistently recognized for our intellectual property management performance. ETRI will not rest on its current achievements and will continue to work hard to achieve intellectual property management performance in the future.”

ETRI is focusing on research and development of core source technologies in national strategic technology fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and next-generation communications (6G) in order to secure future national growth engine technologies.

By implementing the strategy for securing core original technology intellectual property rights (IPR) established this year and securing a number of core original patents in strategic technology fields, we expect our intellectual property performance to increase further in the future.
