Infineon strengthens portfolio including secure smart access and precise location tracking

Infineon Technologies (hereinafter Infineon) is making a full-scale entry into the UWB (ultra-wideband) chipset market, which is projected to reach approximately $3.1 billion by 2028 with an annual growth rate of 13%.

Infineon announced on the 5th that it has acquired Zurich-based startup 3db Access AG (hereinafter 3db).

3db leads secure, low-power UWB (ultra-wideband) technology and is already an IP provider preferred by major automotive brands.

Through this acquisition, Infineon has further strengthened its portfolio for secure smart access, precise location tracking, and enhanced sensing.

With this, Infineon has added UWB to its connectivity product family, which includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth®, Bluetooth® LE, and NFC solutions.

The first IoT use cases include secure access and authentication, precise location tracking and indoor navigation, and occupancy detection utilizing UWB radar implementation.

Infineon acquired 100% of 3db's stock and agreed not to disclose the transaction amount.

Thomas Thomas Rosteck, President of Infineon’s Connected Security Systems business unit, said, “3db’s expertise in UWB technology accelerates Infineon’s IoT roadmap to capitalize on market opportunities for secure connected devices. Now, the two companies will jointly develop complete system solutions that combine low power consumption, enhanced physical layer security, feature-rich RF front-end configurations, and hardware architectures optimized for localization.”
