The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) unveiled to the public its vision as a technology pioneer creating digital innovation and a happy future through proactive and outstanding technology.

ETRI held the 'ETRI Conference 2023' at the Seoul Science and Technology Convention Center on the 7th and 8th.

At the opening ceremony, President Bang Seung-chan stated in his presentation titled "ICT Future Vision and ETRI's Role: Creating a Happy Tomorrow Through Digital Innovation" that he would create transformative technologies that lead humanity into a digital ecosystem through proactive and excellent technology, globally influential quality, and mutually beneficial cooperation.

President Bang Seung-chan stated that ETRI aims to solve many problems in the private, industrial, and social public sectors, and announced that the organization has been restructured around strategic technologies to facilitate such technology development.

He also mentioned that he created accountability and wood through mission-oriented R&D projects for which the director was responsible.

Based on this, they introduced six top challenge projects: AI computing, AI robot intelligence, 6G, metaverse, advanced mobility, and advanced bio.

First, AI computerFuting aims to develop domestic AI semiconductors to help solve many problems across society and industry, and AI robot intelligence aims to create robots that can act like humans as AI assistants.

6G aims to secure international standards and industrialize as the foundation of digital society infrastructure, and focuses on developing technology with 200Gbps and a latency of 5mm/s or less at 800km. He also mentioned free internet on aircraft and the development of low-orbit satellites.

The metaverse aims to build an ultra-realistic society by integrating virtual and physical spaces as the core of services, while advanced mobility convergence aims for UAM and communications, and advanced bio aims to solve diabetes through non-invasive methods.

President Bang Seung-chan stated, “This event serves as an opportunity to present the vision and role of the institute regarding its leading and future challenge areas in relation to national strategic ICT technologies,” adding, “ETRI aims to create a happy future world through digital innovation.”

Meanwhile, at this event, ETRI held a conference to discuss and present four major technologies that have recently become the most important issues—6G, Metaverse, AI semiconductors, and quantum technology—as well as an exhibition of 17 core technologies and a commercialization briefing.

For the keynote speeches, Professor Oh-Kyung Kwon of Hanyang University, former President of the Korean Academy of Engineering, introduced the "Current Status and Future Vision of ICT Industrial Technology," while Professor Shin Cho of Yonsei University, former Senior Secretary for Future Strategy at the Blue House, presented on "Digital Transformation, the ESG Revolution, and Challenges for ICT Technological Innovation."

In addition, a consultation session for promising technologies for commercialization was held at a separate booth.

The ETRI Holdings investment support program and the Korea Technology Guarantee Fund technology commercialization support program were introduced, and technology presentations and consultation sessions in the fields of ETRI smart manufacturing, advanced robots, and artificial intelligence were also held individually in the meeting room.

An official from ETRI stated, “Through this event, we have decided to further solidify the image of Korea as an ICT powerhouse built by our predecessors and for all 2,600 employees to focus more on their role as pioneers in creating a happy future world through digital innovation.”
