The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) (Director Yoo Hee-dong) supports safe driving on slippery roads in winter with ‘Possible Black Ice Information.’

The Korea Meteorological Administration announced that it will resume its navigation-based 'road black ice potential information' service on the 15th to support the traffic safety of winter drivers during the winter snow removal period (November 15th to March 15th).

Information on the possibility of black ice on roads is provided to ensure driver safety when driving on slippery roads.

This information is created by combining precipitation information from radar data, precipitation information from weather observation equipment (AWS) across the country, and temperature information from the road weather observation network, and is calculated into three levels of concern, caution, and danger based on road surface conditions and ground temperature.

This information is delivered to drivers in real time through T Map and Kakao Navi to support driver safety, and is also provided to the Korea Expressway Corporation through a customized web screen and displayed on the road information display (VMS).

The Korea Meteorological Administration provided 'road black ice potential information' for the Central Inland Expressway from February 10 to March 15, and additionally provided 'road visibility risk information' in July.

Information on the possibility of black ice on roads in the future will be provided during the winter snow removal period, and information on road visibility hazards will be provided annually.We plan to provide it.

This information was initially provided in the first half of 2023 to the Central Inland Expressway, where road weather observation equipment is installed, and the service is scheduled to be expanded to the West Coast Expressway this winter. The Korea Meteorological Administration plans to gradually build a road weather observation network and expand the service to all 31 expressways nationwide.

Additionally, in order to support the traffic safety of trucks that can lead to major accidents in the event of a traffic accident, we are preparing with Mappers (Atlan) to provide road hazard weather information through a truck-specific app in the winter of 2023.

Yoo Hee-dong, head of the Korea Meteorological Administration, said, "Black ice, a thin layer of ice that forms on the road and is often called a road killer, can cause cars to suddenly skid while driving, so advance information is essential to maintain a safe distance. We expect that the black ice potential information service will significantly contribute to protecting public safety and reducing the social costs of traffic accidents."
