LG Electronics (CEO Cho Joo-wan) has laid the foundation to lead Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) technology, a key element of future vehicles, by participating as a core member of a global consortium for the development of future mobility solutions.

LG Electronics announced on the 7th that it recently joined as the 9th Governing Body Member of SOAFEE (Scalable Open Architecture for Embedded Edge), a global open standardization organization for automobiles.

LG Electronics has been participating in the Technical Steering Committee and Working Groups of SOAFEE as a voting member since March of last year, and recently became a member of the Board of Directors by unanimous vote following a vote by the board members.

This is the result of being highly recognized for the contributions made to the development of the SDV platform by identifying cloud-native technology usage scenarios considering vehicle driving environments and conducting related technical verifications.

LG Electronics expects that joining the board will allow it to accelerate the securing of SDV technology.

The plan is not only to lead the direction of SOAFEE but also to expand global collaboration channels and secure technological leadership in SDV, which is the core of the future mobility ecosystem.

SDV stands for software-centric vehicle. It is considered a key keyword for enhancing the future mobility customer experience.

In particular, the rapidly growing automotive electronics business is expected to gain further momentum. LG Electronics is leading the infotainment sector, which accounts for a significant portion of vehicle software, and is devoting all its efforts to the advanced development of proprietary solutions across various software areas, including vehicle computing, communications, and operating systems.

As LG Electronics has secured competitiveness in infotainment, telematics, and ADAS products based on customized solutions, the company plans to advance these products and technologies in the future to realize a Top Tier vision of leading global standards.

SOAFEE was established in 2021 under the leadership of British semiconductor design firm ARM. Global IT companies, including German automotive parts manufacturers Bosch and Continental, as well as Red Hat, SUSE, CARIAD, and AWS, serve as board members. The number of global companies participating as SOAFEE members reaches approximately 100.

At 'IAA Mobility 2023' held in Munich, Germany last September, LG Electronics announced the changes in future mobility that SDVs will bring and the status of its preparations for future technologies, while also declaring its vision for the automotive electronics business.

LG Electronics is striving to enhance its technological competitiveness by joining and actively participating in various global associations to lead global standards in the automotive electronics business.

It joined MIPI, a non-profit organization for standardizing mobile and embedded system interfaces, in 2004 and has been active in it. Recently, it also completed its membership in the Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA), a non-profit industry alliance established by the automotive industry to standardize SerDes (serial-to-parallel switcher) technology.
