The communication method of C-ITS has been finally confirmed as LTE-V2X.

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 12th that they will pursue follow-up measures such as revising the technical standards as the 'C-ITS Single Communication Method Decision Expert Committee' that has been operating since last September decided to use LTE-V2X as the single communication method for the next-generation intelligent transport system (C-ITS, Cooperative-Intelligent Transport Systems).

The next-generation intelligent transportation system refers to a system that provides drivers and pedestrians with information on road conditions, fallen objects, traffic accidents, and surrounding vehicles through communication between vehicles and between vehicles and base stations around the road to create a safe road environment.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport decided to decide on a single communication method for C-ITS among the WAVE (DSRC) method based on Wi-Fi technology and the LTE-V2X method based on mobile communication technology within the year through verification and other means in accordance with the inter-ministerial consultation on the C-ITS communication method and the 'New Growth 4.0 Strategy 2023 Implementation Plan and Annual Roadmap' in August 2021, and to promote the nationwide expansion of C-ITS under the single method after 2024.

Accordingly, the two ministries jointly tested the maximum effective communication range, communication area, and delay time of LTE-V2X last year, and conducted a comparative test of WAVE and LTE-V2X methods in 2023.

Afterwards, the Ministry of Science and ICT will have private sector experts in the C-ITS field participate to make professional and fair decisions.The 'C-ITS Communication Method Decision Expert Committee' was formed and operated, and a public hearing attended by approximately 150 people was held on the 16th of last month to hear opinions from the industry.

The 'C-ITS Communication Method Decision Expert Committee' conducted a comprehensive review of technology, industry, and public benefits, as well as the contents of public hearing discussions, and proposed LTE-V2X as the single C-ITS communication method to the Ministry of Science and ICT.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to faithfully collect opinions from relevant ministries and agencies, and then promptly revise the technical standards to finalize the institutionalization of the C-ITS communication method.

In addition, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to establish installation standards to ensure smooth operation of the LTE-V2X method on real roads and build C-ITS infrastructure in stages, starting with roads with high importance.

An official from the Ministry of Science and ICT said, “We hope that domestic autonomous driving infrastructure investment and product development based on the LTE-V2X method will become more active in the future, and in particular, as the spread of C-ITS using the LTE-V2X method is expected to be promoted in earnest in the U.S., China, India, and other countries, we hope that this will be an opportunity for domestic companies to enter the global market.”
