SKT establishes AI governance to leap forward as a global AI company.
SK Telecom announced on the 7th that it is establishing AI governance (a decision-making system) that will manage AI technology and establish its pursuit values. SKT plans to pursue this initiative in three directions: establishing AI governance standards, specifying a dedicated AI governance organization and roles, and establishing an AI governance process.
SK Telecom announced, “As generative AI technology rapidly develops and the need for a regulatory system for AI technology is being raised worldwide, we will proactively introduce an AI decision-making system into our company management to ensure the reliability and safety of AI.”
Through this, SKT expects to secure the reliability and safety of AI, thereby enabling its AI pyramid strategy to have strong execution power.
To establish AI governance standards, SKT will first review global trends in domestic and international AI-related laws and regulations. It will then redefine AI values and establish work guidelines within March. Specifically, it will establish internal standards that SKT members must adhere to during the development and operation of AI technologies and services. To create a dedicated AI governance organization, we operate a task force (TF) with participation from AI technology and service organizations across the company.
Furthermore, SKT will establish an AI governance process to ensure AI governance is integrated into SKT's management system and that continuous monitoring fosters a virtuous cycle of diagnosis and improvement. To this end, SKT plans to form an external advisory group from academia and industry and listen to the voices of various external experts.
SKT's President and Head of External Cooperation Jaeheon Jeong said, "Establishing AI governance will serve as a stepping stone for SKT to leap forward as a global AI company," and added, "We will establish AI governance so that the AI pyramid strategy, which will innovate industries and daily life while securing AI based on trust and safety, can have strong execution power."

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.

ETRI Develops 200Gbps Photodetector… Initiates Localization of Optical Receivers for AI Data Centers
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has developed a photodetector device that processes optical signals of approximately 200Gbps per channel for the first time in Korea. This device is a component that converts optical signals into electrical signals and determines the reception performance of AI data centers and 5G/6G communication networks. ETRI achieved bandwidth of 70GHz or higher and optical responsivity of 0.75A/W or higher, and integrated an indium phosphide lens on the rear of the chip to enhance optical reception efficiency and alignment convenience. The technology was presented at OECC 2025 and was recently published in the international academic journal 'Optics Express'.

SKT and Ericsson Expand Joint Research on AI Networks… Preparing for 6G Beyond 5G Advancement
SK Telecom and Ericsson are expanding AI-based mobile network collaboration. On the 19th, the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding covering 5G advancement through 6G standardization, and agreed to undertake joint research and verification in the areas of AI-RAN, open and autonomous networks, security, and future communication technologies. This collaboration is interpreted as a move to enhance current 5G operational efficiency while preparing for a 6G environment where AI becomes embedded throughout the network. The scope also includes network operations automation, multi-vendor environment response, energy efficiency improvements, and review of communication-sensing fusion technology.

SKT Receives International Standard for AI Data Center Interconnection Structure… Establishes Operating System Standards
SK Telecom's proposed AI data center interworking architecture has received final approval as an international standard at the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) conference. The core of this standard is the classification of AI data centers into three layers—service, management, and infrastructure—and the organization of signaling requirements between layers. As AI service proliferation increases the importance of interworking among various systems within data centers such as computation, power, cooling, storage, and security, this standard is significant in that it presents a common architecture for operations and service delivery. SK Telecom stated that it initiated the relevant standardization project in 2024 and achieved this approval following approximately two years of discussion.
