Microchip's New 2.4GHz RF High-Power Amplifier Delivers 256-QAM and EVM for 802.11b/g/n, Reduces Current Consumption, Extends Ultra-High-Speed WLAN Range
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 26, 2014 – Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller, analog and Flash-IP solutions, today announced a new 2.4 GHz 256-QAM high-power RF amplifier, the SST12CP21.
The newly launched SST12CP21 delivers the lowest EVM and current consumption for 256-QAM and IEEE 802.11n systems. The SST12CP21 delivers high linear output power of up to 23 dBm at a dynamic EVM of 1.75% with MCS9 HT40 MHz bandwidth modulation (at 5 V and 320 mA current consumption). For 802.11g/n applications, it delivers 25 dBm linear output power at 3% EVM with a current consumption of only 350 mA. This significantly extends the range of 802.11b/g/n WLAN and MIMO systems while maintaining the lowest current consumption at up to 256-QAM data rates. The SST12CP21 also meets the spectrum mask of up to 28 dBm for 802.11b/g communications. It also comes in a compact 3mm x 3mm x 0.55mm 16-pin QFN package, which is a widely used pin-out, saving board space.

For system developers of Wi-Fi® MIMO access points, routers, set-top boxes, and more, maximizing data rates and range while minimizing power consumption is a critical challenge. The SST12CP21 power amplifier enables multi-channel high-speed WLAN systems with low operating current of 320mA at 23dBm and 350mA at 25dBm. In addition, the amplifier features 50Ω on-chip input matching and simple output matching for ease of use and board space savings. It also integrates a linear output detector to ensure accurate output control over temperature and 2:1 output mismatch.
“Microchip’s RF power amplifiers have a strong position in the WLAN market by combining reliability with high-power efficiency, a feature that can only be achieved using InGaP/GaAs HBT,” said Daniel Chow, vice president of Microchip’s radio frequency (RF) business unit. “The SST12CP21 also provides lower EVM while maintaining reliable operation over temperature. This new RF power amplifier delivers efficient operation of 320 mA at 23 dBm with 1.75 percent EVM and 350 mA at 25 dBm with 3 percent EVM, extending the range of 802.11n and ultra-high data-rate 256-QAM MIMO systems.”
