The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Minister Ahn Deok-geun) is announcing a call for proposals for seven new projects under the 2024 Core Materials, Parts and Equipment (K-Materials) Key Strategic Technology Technical Support Infrastructure Development Program. The call for proposals covers the following fields: △demonstration and infrastructure development for strengthening semiconductor AI semiconductor supply chains △infrastructure development for demonstration of high-performance coatings/films for OLED displays △reliability infrastructure development for localization of high-power power conversion devices for future vehicles △demonstration infrastructure development for strengthening next-generation communication component supply chains in electrical and electronics △evaluation infrastructure development for control modules for autonomous collaborative manufacturing processes in machinery △demonstration infrastructure development for high-toughness and hydrogen-embrittlement-resistant metal materials for hydrogen industry in metals △infrastructure development supporting commercialization of eco-friendly bio-based materials in basic chemicals, etc.

Expected to increase AI PC demand in the second half of the year… “Global Edge AI War Accelerates in 2025”
The semiconductor industry outlook for the second half of this year is being reported positively due to increased IT device demand, including AI PC and new smartphone launches. While the semiconductor industry has unveiled AI PC chipsets in large numbers this year, major global CSPs are expected to begin full-scale expansion into the edge AI market starting next year. Alongside this, demand for power-efficient memory is also anticipated to accelerate.

Creating 3D AI Semiconductors with 2D Semiconductor Materials
The research team led by Dr. Kim Yong-hoon from the Energy and Environmental Materials Research Division at the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Choi Chul-jin) has successfully implemented a three-dimensional ultra-high-density neuromorphic synapse device through collaborative research with Professor Hwang Hyun-sang's research team at Pohang University of Science and Technology, opening up the possibility for future commercialization of three-dimensional artificial intelligence semiconductors using two-dimensional materials.

The Ministry of Science and Technology is continuing its efforts to promote the development of the AI industry. It has designated regulatory exceptions for 23 new technologies and services, and the K-Cloud technology development project based on domestic AI semiconductors has completed its preliminary feasibility study.
