Cybersecurity is rapidly emerging as a top priority for automakers.

Rockwell Automation, the world's largest industrial automation and digital transformation company, has released its 9th annual 'Smart Manufacturing State of the World - Automotive' report.

This report was prepared with the participation of 182 leaders from automakers, automotive supply chain manufacturers and electric vehicle manufacturers in 15 major manufacturing countries.

According to the report, the automotive industry is focused on leveraging emerging technologies to reduce risk, create growth and maximize workforce potential.

Automotive manufacturers recognize that the industry is rapidly evolving in the era of Industry 4.0, and they are particularly aware of the severity of security issues, with system downtime costs due to cyberattacks projected to reach $1.99 billion in the first half of 2023.

Key findings from the survey show that cybersecurity risks will emerge as the biggest external obstacle for automakers in 2024, jumping from ninth place in 2023 to first place.

Additionally, 97% of automakers are using or evaluating smart manufacturing technologies, up from 85% in 2023.

Technology investment increased 35% year-over-year, from 23% to 31% of operating budget.

Wearable technology is one of the top 10 investment areas for automakers in 2024, ranking third overall.

Employee engagement will be the biggest workforce issue for automakers in 2024.was identified as a barrier to entry, and reducing manufacturing waste was highlighted as the most important element in the ESG programs of automobile manufacturers.

Automakers are focusing on strategies that prioritize workforce retention, upskilling, and engagement. Technologies such as smart manufacturing and automation play a key role in complementing and augmenting the capabilities of employees, thereby driving positive business outcomes.
