Hanbat University's Heungbot Team Wins the Honorable First Place in the SoC Taekwondo Robot Category
November 3, 2014, Seoul – Altera Korea ( www.altera.com ) announced that the awards ceremony for the winners of the finals of the 13th Intelligent SoC Robot War 2014, officially sponsored by Altera, was held on October 26.
The 'Intelligent SoC Robot War ( www.socrobotwar.org ) 2014,' hosted by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, organized by the KAIST Design and Application Research Center (SDIA), and officially sponsored by Altera Korea and Altera Headquarters University Program, is an SoC robot competition for university and graduate students nationwide that marks its 13th year.
About 30 universities and 105 teams participated in this competition and advanced to the finals after fierce competition.
The winner was determined at the finals held for four days from October 23 to 26. The Huro-competition category is an intelligent robot competition that combines various recognition algorithms and driving algorithms utilizing robot image recognition, wireless communication, and voice recognition.
The Taekwondo Robot event is a competition in which the robot determines the winner by autonomously attacking and defending without external remote control, using image recognition technology to identify the position, distance, and movement of the opposing robot.
Altera sponsored 64 DE0-nano boards to the 8 winning teams in the Huro-competition and SoC Taekwondo Robot categories, all of which will be returned to the respective university laboratories.
In addition, Altera has provided the Cyclone® FPGA and all configuration components mounted on the development boards distributed to teams that passed the first test conducted for each category after registration.
The Cyclone® FPGA processes image format conversion, noise filtering, and specific color extraction in real time from images obtained through the robot's camera, and by calculating the distance and coordinates of the target tracked by the robot
It is an essential component for the participating teams' development as it serves as a core chip for image recognition.
Meanwhile, the Intelligent SoC Robot War was first held at the Asia-Pacific SoC Technology Exhibition (AP-SoC 2002) in November 2002, with the goal of fostering advanced technical personnel in the SoC field and revitalizing the IT-SoC and intelligent robot sectors, which are next-generation growth engine businesses, through the implementation of intelligent robots utilizing SoCs.
Since 2005, a new bipedal robot competition called SoC Taekwondo Robot was established in addition to the existing SoC Tank Robot, and since 2010, it has been held with two categories: Huro-competition and SoC Taekwondo Robot.
Altera began officially sponsoring this competition as part of its University Program in 2008.
