Microchip Launches World's First Development Platform Combining 2D Multi-Touch and 3D Gestures

October 14, 2014 – Microchip Technology (Korea Representative: Han Byung-don), a global leader in microcontrollers, analog semiconductors, and flash-IP solutions, announced that it is expanding its Human Interface Input Sensing Solutions portfolio by launching the 3DTouchPad, a PC peripheral and the world's first development platform combining 2D multi-touch and 3D gestures.

The 3D TouchPad is a powerful development platform and reference design, a new input sensing device that adds free space gesture recognition to projected capacitive multi-touch. Targeting the PC/peripheral market, the 3D TouchPad is the first development platform to combine 2D multi-touch and 3D air gesture input. Through Microchip’s GestIC® technology, which can detect 3D gestures within a range of up to 10 cm, the 3D TouchPad provides robust and innovative 3D gesture recognition capabilities, while supporting up to 10 touch points and multi-finger surface gestures using Microchip’s highly responsive projected capacitive 2D multi-touch solution. These 2D multi-touch capabilities are further enhanced by the MTCH652, a new capacitive touchscreen line driver released by Microchip on October 8.
The 3D TouchPad requires no drivers and offers excellent features compatible with Windows® 7/8.X and OS X®, advanced multi-touch capabilities including 3D aerial gestures and surface gestures, and free downloadable GUI and SDK/API packages for developers. This technology can be utilized not only in the PC market and computer touchpads but also in hygienic hands-free products, home automation, remote controls, game controllers, wearable devices, and automotive applications.
