A total of 331 recent GPS interference incidents
Published2024.11.11 15:15The government said that although there has been no actual damage caused by recent GPS interference coming from the North Korean direction of Gaepong and Haeju, it is taking measures to ensure the safety of aircraft, fishing boats, etc.
The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Yoo Sang-im) announced that a total of 331 cases of GPS interference were recorded in Korea in early November.
GPS radio interference is the transmission of jamming signals in the GPS frequency band at a higher intensity than the signals received by the GPS, thereby interfering with the normal use of GPS signal utilization services. In the event of radio interference, the reception of location information on land, sea, and air traffic may be disrupted.
Radio interference signals coming from the direction of Gaepung and Haeju in North Korea are continuously being detected by the Radio Monitoring System (Central Radio Management Center), and from November 1 to 10 (as of 11:00), a total of 331 cases of GPS signal reception failure were reported, including 279 cases for aircraft and 52 cases for ships, and no actual damage such as operational accidents occurred.
The Ministry of Science and ICT operates a permanent GPS radio interference monitoring system, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is taking measures to ensure smooth operation by issuing aviation notices to warn GPS users, using alternative aircraft navigation and ground navigation safety facilities, and providing support to control agencies.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is taking measures such as transmitting the situation, guiding safe fishing operations for fishing boats in cooperation with the Coast Guard, providing guidance on navigation, and using alternative navigation methods for ships.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to closely monitor GPS interference situations to prevent damage to aircraft and ship operations, and maintain a constant response posture in cooperation with related ministries, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

Two Nordic IoT devices adopted by Avnet IoT modules

Nordic Provides SiP Equipped with 'GPS-Supported' LTE-M/NB-IoT Modem
Nordic's nRF9160 low-power SiP, which integrates LTE-M/NB-IoT modem and GPS functionality, has been adopted in the C7004 Cube GPS tracking device from U.S. startup Cube Trackers. The Cube GPS is a device measuring approximately 70×40×16mm that periodically transmits the location of tracked objects to the cloud through a cellular network, maintaining battery life of approximately 10 to 60 days depending on GPS update intervals.

Nordic Unveils Cellular-Based Cloud Location Service
Nordic Semiconductor has launched nRF Cloud Location Services. This service enables customers to access detailed, fast, and accurate commercial location services for cellular IoT devices powered by Nordic's nRF9160 SiP through cloud-based products. To this end, it provides A-GPS and P-GPS-based positioning for indoor and outdoor applications, as well as positioning using single and multi-cell methods.
