STMicroelectronics (ST) has achieved a semiconductor carbon reduction by supplying its French facility with 1.5TWh of renewable energy produced from wind and solar power plants over the next 15 years.

ST announced on the 11th that it recently signed a substantive direct power purchase agreement (Power Purchase Agreement) with TotalEnergies.

The contract will start in January 2025 and will supply a total of 1.5 TWh of renewable energy over the next 15 years.

Total Energies will supply ST with renewable electricity (including guaranteed origin) generated from two state-of-the-art wind and solar power plants with a combined capacity of 75 MW.

The power includes structured services that transform intermittent production into a certain amount of 'baseload' green electricity.

This is the first time a 15-year contract of this type has been signed in France.

The positive impact of wind and solar projects on the environment and local communities was a key success factor in securing this contract.

“This PPA, our first in France, is another important step towards achieving our goal of sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2027 and carbon neutrality for our operations (Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and partly Scope 3),” said Geoff West, ST’s Executive Vice President and Chief Procurement Officer. “PPAs will play a key role in our energy transition, and we have already signed several PPAs to support our operations in Italy and Malaysia. Starting in 2025, the PPA with Total Energies will provide significant renewable energy to ST’s French operations, including R&D, design, sales and marketing, and high-volume chip manufacturing.”
