ROHM, a company specializing in semiconductors and sensors, has enhanced its high-speed, high-precision sensing technology by adopting an infrared VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) that is more directional than conventional LEDs.


ROHM announced on the 28th that it has newly developed a compact analog proximity sensor 'RPR-0730' that enables precise detection of high-speed moving objects, and has started mass production in October 2025.

This new product is expected to be widely used in applications requiring high-speed and high-precision sensing in various consumer and industrial devices, such as printers, transporters, copiers, and label printers.

The RPR-0730 is a compact proximity sensor using a reflective photoreflector method, employing an infrared VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) with higher directivity than conventional LEDs as the light-emitting element.

Through this, fine lines with a width of 0.1 mm can be accurately identified at high speed, and an analog output phototransistor was applied as the light receiving element to achieve a response performance of 10 μs. This enables even faster and more precise sensing compared to the existing digital output type 'RPR-0720'.

The sensor package is designed with an ultra-compact size of 2.0mm × 1.0mm × 0.55mm, allowing it to be easily installed inside precision instruments or transport devices with significant space constraints.

Furthermore, by employing a visible light blocking resin to suppress ambient light, stable detection is possible even in environments with significant light fluctuations, such as artificial lighting or sunlight. This serves as a factor that enhances usability in various industrial settings, including factory automation and outdoor equipment.

The RPR-0730 is priced at 350 yen (excluding tax) based on a sample price and is available for purchase through major online component distribution platforms such as CoreStaff Online and Chip 1 Stop.
