Samsung Electronics has begun developing technology that can provide stable heating and cooling performance even in extreme environments.

Samsung Electronics announced on the 29th that it has established the 'Samsung HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Test Lab' in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, the northernmost part of Japan.

Asahikawa is a region known for its extreme cold and heavy snowfall, with winter temperatures reaching below -20 degrees Celsius and monthly accumulated snowfall reaching up to 127 cm. Samsung Electronics plans to utilize the region's climate conditions to intensively verify the performance of its core technologies for air conditioning and heating, including its defrosting system and heat pump solution.

The defrosting system is a technology that maintains heating performance by removing frost that accumulates in the heat exchanger. Samsung Electronics is introducing a product that uses an algorithm that learns the shape of frost and determines the optimal defrosting time in Korea, North America, and Europe. This test lab will further enhance the performance of the technology through real-world verification.

Samsung Electronics is also collaborating with the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and Lulea University of Technology to target the growing residential heat pump market, particularly in Europe, and is accelerating the development of high-performance products by verifying the research results in various ways at the HVAC test lab.

Samsung HVAC Test Lab is also developing air conditioning technology that reflects local climate and actual living conditions through joint research with Samsung Research Japan (SRJ) and Hokkaido University. This will enhance compressor and heat exchanger performance and continue to advance control and cycle technologies.

Samsung Electronics DA Business Division Vice President Moon Jong-seung said, “We have set up an additional testing facility in Hokkaido, an island with a harsh climate, to further develop our high-efficiency heating and cooling solutions,” adding, “We will secure a new growth engine and aggressively target the global air conditioning market.”

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is strengthening its position in the premium market, supplying approximately 1,000 "1 Way" and 400 "DVM S2" system air conditioners to a high-end complex in Manila, Philippines, and approximately 800 HVAC solutions to a luxury resort in Bali, Indonesia. In May, the company acquired FläktGroup, Europe's largest HVAC company, and plans to fully expand its supply of central HVAC solutions optimized for large-scale facilities such as data centers, industrial complexes, and hospitals.
