STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor company, has taken a full-scale step into smart home innovation with the industry's first Matter NFC chip.

ST announced on the 8th that it has launched the industry's first secure NFC chip (ST25DA-C) supporting the latest Matter 1.5 standard.

This launch paves the way for groundbreaking improvements in smart home device integration and user experience.

The biggest inconvenience when installing smart home devices was the complicated network connection process.

ST's ST25DA-C chip enables users to add a variety of IoT devices, such as lights, access control devices, and security cameras, to their home network with just a single tap of their smartphone.

This reflects the latest features of Matter 1.5, and is expected to contribute to the popularization of smart homes by allowing even non-expert consumers to easily connect devices.

The ST25DA-C chip goes beyond simple connection convenience to enhance security and stability.

NFC-based onboarding significantly reduces setup complexity, especially for devices without batteries or those with challenging installation environments.

“The ST25DA-C chip is the industry’s first to support Matter 1.5 and NFC,” said David Richetto, General Manager, Connected Security Division, STMicroelectronics.He emphasized that “it is a key technology that simultaneously satisfies the convenience, interoperability, and security that consumers want,” and “it will revolutionize the smart home user experience by combining these technologies.”

“Matter is a critical standard for the smart home industry, enabling seamless communication between devices, mobile apps, and cloud services,” said Shobhit Srivastava, senior principal analyst at market research firm Omdia. “ST’s ST25DA-C chip provides a strong foundation for manufacturers to develop the next generation of smart home products.”
