STMicroelectronics Applies High-Efficiency GaN Technology Optimized for White Goods and Industrial Motor Drives

STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor company, has applied high-efficiency GaN technology optimized for white goods and industrial motor drives.
ST officially announced on the 26th a new GaN (Gallium-Nitride)-based smart power IC platform, 'GaNSPIN', that significantly improves the energy efficiency of home appliances and industrial motion control systems.
This new product is attracting attention from the industry as it is designed to improve the energy ratings of next-generation white goods and factory automation equipment.
GaN power semiconductors are rapidly expanding in the power adapter and fast charger markets due to their higher power efficiency and faster switching speeds compared to conventional silicon.
ST has expanded its platform to enable the application of this GaN technology to motor-based products such as washing machines, hair dryers, power tools, and industrial pumps, fans, and compressors.
This allows manufacturers to achieve higher rotational speeds and improved performance while reducing energy consumption.
“The new GaNSPIN System-in-Package (SiP) platform maximizes the efficiency of wide bandgap (WBG) technology in motion control applications,” said Domenico Arrigo, General Manager of ST’s Application Products Division.“It is designed to be a solution that has all the elements needed to develop next-generation home appliances, including smaller and lighter control modules, cost reduction, and improved energy ratings,” he emphasized.
The first products released this time, GaNSPIN611 and GaNSPIN612, support motor drive of up to 400W and can be applied to both household and industrial motor drives.
The two products offer pin compatibility, allowing manufacturers to easily expand their product lineups based on the same design.
In particular, the GaNSPIN611 is available in a 9 mm × 9 mm QFN package and has a competitive cost structure starting at $4.44.
ST unveiled this product line at the SPS 2025 (Smart Production Solutions 2025) exhibition, actively promoting its technology to the global industrial automation market.
The GaNSPIN platform is expected to contribute to manufacturers' energy-saving goals by meeting key elements required by motion control systems, such as high-efficiency power conversion, miniaturization, and high-speed responsiveness.
