STMicroelectronics (ST) has launched the 'STSID140-12', which features an ultra-miniaturized gate drive component for thyristor-based power control circuits used in AC-powered small appliances such as hair dryers.

On March 4, ST unveiled the new product in Seoul, stating that it was designed to reduce design burden by integrating insulation functions into a small package.

Thyristors (SCRs) are widely used in power-line environments, such as dimmers, heaters, and motor drives. However, the insulation configuration and component placement between the low-voltage control unit and the high-voltage power unit often impact product thickness, cost, and assembly process. ST explained that this product aims to expand circuit configuration and mounting options by incorporating the insulation structure into a compact package.

The STSID140-12 is packaged in a leadless DFN package, with an external size of 5.35 mm × 3.45 mm and a height of 1.2 mm. It is designed to support an isolation voltage of 1,250 V (RMS) by including a transformer structure for insulation inside the package (on the substrate).

The driving method supports both zero cross switching (ZCS) and phase angle control (PAC). The control input is referenced to a 3.3V logic level, and the gate drive current can be up to 40mA, making it applicable to driving not only SCRs but also triacs and solid-state relays (SSRs), ST said. Protection features include undervoltage lockout (UVLO) and ESD immunity, and creepage distance is specified at 3.92mm.

An evaluation board, the STEVAL-SID140V1, is also provided to help kick-start development. ST stated that the certification process for the board is ongoing and is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2026.

The product is now in mass production, with a unit price of $0.92 for orders of 10,000 units. ST added that it is available for purchase through ST eSTore and official distribution channels.
