LG Innotek is partnering with Kakao Mobility to develop autonomous driving sensing solutions. The strategy aims to secure the data foundation necessary for the advancement of autonomous driving technology by combining sensing modules, such as cameras, radar, and lidar, with real-world driving data infrastructure.

LG Innotek announced on the 20th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kakao Mobility for cooperation in the development of autonomous driving solutions. The two companies plan to proceed with joint development by combining LG Innotek's sensing modules with Kakao Mobility's autonomous driving data collection and management systems and software capabilities.

This collaboration goes beyond the simple combination of sensors and software, focusing instead on enhancing the completeness of autonomous driving solutions based on data obtained from real-world road environments. As autonomous driving systems must recognize diverse driving conditions and unexpected situations, sensor performance and data quality are considered key factors in technological advancement.

Kakao Mobility plans to apply LG Innotek's sensing technology to an integrated management system that automates the entire process from autonomous driving data collection to learning and distribution. LG Innotek plans to enhance the performance and completeness of its camera, radar, and lidar modules by utilizing real-world driving data secured by Kakao Mobility.

Ryu Geung-seon, CEO of Kakao Mobility, stated that through this collaboration, they will secure high-quality driving data and pursue the internalization of core autonomous driving technologies. Moon Hyuk-soo, President of LG Innotek, said that the completeness of autonomous driving is determined by data and that they will advance their sensing technology capabilities through cooperation with Kakao Mobility.

LG Innotek is expanding the optical technology it has accumulated in the smartphone sector into the realm of physical AI, such as autonomous driving and robots. Based on its core technologies in cameras, radar, and lidar, the company provides customized sensing solutions and has set a goal to grow its mobility sensing solution business revenue to 2 trillion won by 2030.

Recently, the company entered into a strategic partnership with Applied Intuition for the joint development of autonomous driving solutions and is also developing vision sensing systems for humanoids with Boston Dynamics. This collaboration with Kakao Mobility is interpreted as part of a process to expand the sensing technology secured primarily in autonomous driving into real-world AI fields such as robots and drones.
