IBS Appoints Research Group Head Jang Seok-bok as New President

The government has appointed Research Group Leader Jang Seok-bok as the new president of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS). This marks the first time an internal research group leader has been appointed as president, raising expectations for the institution's operation that reflects field research experience.The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 4th that it has appointed Jang Seok-bok, Director of the IBS Center for Molecular Activation and Catalytic Reactions and Distinguished Professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), as the 4th President of IBS. His term of office is five years from the date of appointment.
New President Jang Seok-bok has led the research group since the early days of IBS's launch in 2012. This appointment marks the first time an IBS research group head has been appointed as president.
IBS is a national research institute conducting basic science research, featuring an operational structure centered on research groups. A key feature of this personnel reshuffle is that field research experience can be reflected in the institution's operations.
Director Jang is a researcher in the field of organic chemistry catalytic reactions and has published numerous research achievements. He has a history of being selected as a Top 1% Researcher (HCR) by a global academic analysis institution for consecutive years from 2015 to 2022.
Director Jang was born in Yeongwol, Gangwon-do in 1962, graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Korea University, obtained a master's degree from KAIST, and a doctorate from Harvard University in the United States. He subsequently served as a professor at KAIST and a research group director at IBS.
In terms of academic activities, he has continued his research career in the field of chemistry through serving as an editorial board member for international academic journals and achieving major research results. He has published over 280 papers, with more than 40,000 citations.
The Ministry of Science and ICT stated that through this personnel reshuffle, it is expected that IBS will be able to strengthen its competitiveness as a global research institution and contribute to the development of the domestic basic science research ecosystem.

Implementation of ultra-small semiconductor devices with 0.4 nm gate electrodes
The research team at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS, Director Noh Do-young), led by Cho Moon-ho, head of the Van der Waals Quantum Materials Research Unit (professor at POSTECH Department of Materials Science and Engineering), has implemented an ultra-miniaturized semiconductor device of a new structure by applying one-dimensional metallic material with atomic-scale width to two-dimensional semiconductor technology.
