Texas Instruments Korea (President and CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/kr) May 12, 2015 – Texas Instruments (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) today introduced the industry’s first fully integrated 5-A single-cell lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery charger. This new device features Texas Instruments’ proprietary MaxCharge technology, which enables faster, cooler charging, reducing charge times by up to 60 percent compared to conventional battery chargers. The bq25892 switch-mode charger maximizes the benefits of unprecedented fast charging while providing a safe charging experience for users. MaxCharge technology enables faster charge times and cooler charging, improving the user experience and extending the overall life of electronic devices in many Li-ion applications, including smartphones, tablets, drones, power banks, and industrial and medical equipment.

High-efficiency charging ICs only increase the temperature by at least 18˚C when charging at 3.5A. It combines narrow voltage (NVDC) power path management with TI's MaxCharge technology to support input voltages up to 14 V, enabling faster, lower temperature charging while delivering up to 5 A of charge current.

Tools and Support

The I2C-controlled 1S, 5A fast-charge IC is available as a new TI Designs reference design, TIDA-00538. This reference design utilizes MaxCharge technology to provide turnkey access to high input voltage and variable USB OTG boost, reducing battery charging time and extending battery life during the discharge phase.

Supply period and price

The bq25892 charger IC is currently in volume production and is available through the TI store and authorized distributors in a 4-mm x 4-mm, 24-pin quad flat no-lead (QFN) package. The bq25890 and bq25892 for smartphones and tablets are priced at $2.50 in 1,000-unit quantities, while the new bq25895, which supports power banks, is available for $2.00.
