Korea Institute of Materials Science Shares AI Application Cases in Materials Science

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) announced on the 29th that it held the '1st Materials AI Technology Forum' at its headquarters in Changwon, Gyeongnam on June 24. This forum was organized to share the current status of the application of AI technology in the materials field with experts from industry, academia, and research institutes.
The forum covered specific application cases in the field of materials research, such as AI-based material design and prediction, research automation, and the utilization of literature and data.
Experts from industry, academia, and research institutions participated to present their experiences in applying technology in their respective fields and exchanged opinions.
It is reported that the Korea Institute of Materials Science plans to regularize discussions on materials AI technology, starting with this forum.

KIMS and UNIST Develop Electrochemical System for Simultaneous Production of Hydrogen and Formate Using Waste Glycerol
A joint research team from the Korea Institute of Materials Science and UNIST has developed an electrochemical system that produces hydrogen and formate simultaneously by utilizing glycerol, a biodiesel byproduct. The research team implemented an anion exchange membrane electrolysis system that applies glycerol oxidation reaction instead of the conventional oxygen evolution reaction in water electrolysis. Using a copper-cobalt-based non-precious metal catalyst, the team achieved 110 mA/cm² at 1.31 V, with formate selectivity of approximately 96%, and confirmed stable operation even in a large-area cell of 79 cm². The related research was published in the international academic journal Joule on March 18, 2026.

KIMS and Hanwha Aerospace Unveil Aircraft Engine Material Technology at Science Festival
The Korea Institute of Materials Science and Hanwha Aerospace operated a joint booth at the '2026 Republic of Korea Science Festival,' where they unveiled collaborative achievements in aerospace engine material technologies. The two organizations showcased domestic indigenization technologies for key aerospace engine materials including compressor blades, ceramic matrix composites (CMC), and thermal barrier coatings, and also exhibited a domestic aerospace engine model. This exhibition was promoted as part of the joint research center collaboration, with a focus on introducing the cooperative system spanning from material development through testing and evaluation to mass production application.
