NXP Semiconductors' UWB (Ultra-Wideband) solution is being applied to mass-production BMW Group vehicles. The Trimension NCJ29D6 product family processes precise distance measurement and short-range radar functionality in a single chip, implementing everything from digital key to occupant detection on a single platform, which is evaluated as an example of expanding the scope of UWB application in vehicles.

NXP announced on the 5th that the Trimension NCJ29D6 product family is scheduled to be sequentially integrated into BMW Group vehicles starting with certain vehicle programs in 2026.

The product features a configuration that integrates UWB-based secure positioning and short-range radar into a single chip, simultaneously supporting hands-free vehicle access using smartphones and smartwatches as well as in-vehicle occupant detection functionality, according to NXP.

BMW's UWB-based "digital key plus" allows users to use smartphones or smartwatches as a substitute for physical keys.

When a driver approaches the vehicle, the doors automatically unlock without any additional operation, and user-specific settings such as personalized lighting configuration or welcome sequence are automatically executed, NXP explained.

The occupant detection function detects situations where people or animals are left inside the vehicle using UWB signals and sends a warning to the user.

This function addresses regulatory requirements in Europe and China, and will also support NCAP protocols in the future, according to NXP.

Based on this platform, NXP explained that OEMs can additionally implement UWB-based features such as △kick sensing △intrusion alarm △automatic charging.

Marcus Stäbler, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Secure Vehicle Access at NXP Semiconductors, stated, "The Trimension UWB platform provides high value to OEMs by implementing new functions in a single system. Digital key and occupant detection are just the beginning, and various UWB-based functions can be added based on our vehicle security hardware platform."
