OpenAI is supporting 14 independent projects conducted by universities, research institutions, and policy organizations across 5 countries with funding and infrastructure, aiming to expand economic opportunities and strengthen social resilience from AI proliferation. Yonsei University has been uniquely selected in Korea.

 

On the 18th, OpenAI announced it will provide a total of $1 million (approximately 1.4 billion won) in research funding and up to $1 million in OpenAI API credits to 14 research and demonstration projects being conducted in the United States, EU, Brazil, Singapore, and Korea. Over 400 individuals and institutions submitted proposals for the open call, the projects will run for 6 months, and results are scheduled to be announced in 2027.

 

The 14 projects are structured around two pillars. One is the economic opportunity field, which seeks ways for workers, businesses, and regions to equitably share productivity gains and economic benefits from AI. The other is the social resilience field, which addresses △AI safety △international information sharing △responsible AI use in public policy. This initiative is a follow-up to OpenAI's "Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age" announced in June, designed to support external institutions in independently validating policy ideas and developing alternatives.

 

Yonsei University will undertake the "Democratic Accountability Using AI" project, analyzing National Assembly records and other documents using AI to quantitatively evaluate the National Assembly's government check and oversight function. The analysis results will be validated independently by multiple researchers to ensure reliability. Yonsei University plans to publicly release the analysis report and a pilot dataset in 2027. The scope of support includes prototype development, datasets, and evaluation frameworks in addition to research reports and policy models.

 

Lee Sang-hyun, Head of External Relations for Asia-Pacific at OpenAI, stated, "We hope this research will be utilized by governments and societies of each country to design policies suited to regional conditions and to broaden public discourse on economic opportunities and social resilience in the AI era," and added, "We hope Yonsei University's research becomes a responsible AI application example that contributes to the Korean National Assembly and the advancement of democracy."
