Embedded AI Functionality Enhances Drone and Robot Performance

STMicroelectronics has launched next-generation 6-axis inertial measurement units (IMUs) that meet sustainable material standards while providing high-precision context awareness functionality.

On the 30th, ST announced the introduction of new 6-axis IMU models LSM6DSK320X and ISM6HGK256X targeting consumer and industrial markets.

The new products are integrated sensors combining an accelerometer and gyroscope, supporting precise motion detection and context awareness in smart devices, drones, robots, and industrial asset monitoring equipment.

Notably, these products were developed as part of ST's 'ST Sustainable Technology' program and are designed to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulatory requirements including BPA-free and lead-free (Pb-free) standards.

Supporting High-Precision Context Awareness for Drones and Robots

Both products are based on ST's newly applied Super-Symmetric gyroscope architecture.

This structure utilizes two symmetrical electromechanical structures operating in reverse phase to reduce the effects of vibration and shock. This enables improved precision across diverse applications including drone flight stabilization, structural health monitoring, game controllers, and sports analysis.

Additionally, the dual accelerometer design enables simultaneous measurement of general motion at ±16g levels and high-acceleration events up to ±320g. This enhances impact detection and motion analysis performance.

Embedded AI Functionality and Long-Term Industrial Supply Support

The LSM6DSK320X and ISM6HGK256X incorporate ST's Machine Learning Core (MLC), enabling AI computation directly on the sensor.

This functionality is utilized to reduce system processor load and improve power efficiency.

The industrial model ISM6HGK256X operates from -40°C to +105°C and is designated as a product eligible for ST's 10-year long-term supply program. The consumer-grade LSM6DSK320X supports temperatures from -40°C to +85°C.

The products are available in a 2.5×3×0.83mm package, with pricing starting at $4.60 per unit for the LSM6DSK320X and $5.10 per unit for the ISM6HGK256X based on 1,000-unit quantities.
