August 21, 2015 – Linear Technology Corporation (NYSE: LTC3121) announces the LTC3121, a 3MHz current-mode, synchronous boost DC/DC converter with integrated output disconnect. Its internal 1.5A switches provide a high output voltage of 5.5V from a 1.8V input voltage range during startup (0.5V operating), making it ideal for batteries or standard 3.3V and 5V supplies. The LTC3121 delivers up to 400mA of continuous output current from a 5V input to 12V. Its 1.5A current limit makes it well-suited for applications such as PCI Express where input current is constrained and external components must be minimized. Pin-selectable Burst Mode® operation reduces quiescent current to only 25µA, extending battery runtime in handheld applications. The combination of a thermally enhanced 3mm x 4mm DFN-12 package and a constant switching frequency of up to 3MHz allows designers to balance PCB solution size with optimal efficiency.

The LTC3121 features an internal synchronous switch with an RDS(ON) of only 121mΩ (N-channel) and 188mΩ (P-channel) to deliver efficiencies of up to 95%. Output disconnect allows the output voltage to fully discharge during shutdown and eliminates large inrush currents during start-up, minimizing the load on the input power supply. The LTC3121 regulates the output voltage when the input voltage exceeds the output voltage, making the device compatible with any battery chemistries. For applications requiring the lowest noise operation, the LTC3121 can be configured via an external pin to operate in a constant PWM mode. Additional features include external synchronization, output voltage protection and robust short-circuit protection.
