Partnering with Freescale to jointly develop next-generation intelligent camera systems for autonomous vehicles

LG Electronics is accelerating its automotive parts business.

LG Electronics announced that it will jointly develop key components for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for next-generation autonomous vehicles with the U.S. semiconductor company Freescale.

LG Electronics recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Freescale to jointly develop a "next-generation intelligent camera system." This next-generation intelligent camera system automatically recognizes obstacles that the driver fails to detect while driving, controlling the vehicle to bring it to an immediate stop.

In addition, through accurate forward recognition, it alerts the driver with a warning sound if the vehicle deviates from the driving lane and automatically recognizes speed limit signs on the road to help prevent the vehicle from exceeding the speed limit.

Through this collaboration, LG Electronics will be able to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicle components with enhanced accuracy and stability. LG Electronics has accumulated world-class technological know-how necessary for the development of camera systems, including video, sensors, and wireless communication, in the home appliance and mobile sectors. It is expected to create synergy by combining this with Freescale's capabilities in developing advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) processors.

LG Electronics VC Business Division President Lee Woo-jong emphasized, “LG Electronics is fully equipped with the automotive electronics and IT technologies required by future automobiles,” adding, “It is significant in that we have secured the perfect partner to strengthen our ability to develop components for autonomous vehicles.”

Matt Johnson, Vice President and General Manager of Freescale Automotive’s MCU Group, stated, “By complementing the capabilities of both companies, we will be able to enhance the safety of autonomous vehicles,” adding, “We expect to secure the capability to develop differentiated advanced driver assistance system components.”
