Launch of an Innovative Smart Platform for Medical Prescription Compliance

NXP Semiconductors announced NHS315x, a new platform designed to help patients accurately follow their doctors' prescriptions. This announcement represents NXP's commitment to the smart healthcare industry and demonstrates that technology can play a pivotal role in the treatment of patients with chronic diseases.

Despite medical advancements over the past few decades, treatment remains insufficient because many patients do not take their medications as prescribed. Elderly patients may forget to take their medicine, and patients with chronic diseases may stop taking it unaware that a slight improvement in their condition could trigger a severe chain reaction and relapse. In the United States, the financial loss resulting from non-compliance with prescriptions amounts to approximately $280 billion annually, while the loss of life reaches 125,000.

NXP has launched a solution designed to address this very problem. By attaching NFC sensors to transparent plastic pill capsules or vials, it tracks which medication was taken out of the container and when. Simply placing a smartphone against the container records this information. This data can be used to assist patients, caregivers, and medical professionals by providing treatment and personalized services tailored to each patient.

“According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 50% of patients find it difficult to follow long-term treatment instructions. “Patients suffer as their health deteriorates due to reduced treatment efficacy, while individuals or institutions bearing the cost suffer as treatment is prolonged and expenses increase,” they stated. “Improving prescription compliance leads to better treatment outcomes, benefiting patients, individuals, public health budgets, and pharmaceutical companies alike. We believe our prescription compliance platform will help solve one of the greatest challenges facing healthcare systems globally.”

The value this product can provide has already been confirmed in the Honors Academy program at Radboud University in the Netherlands, which conducted research focused on prescription compliance to see how technology can be effectively used to solve problems.

NXP plans to collaborate with pharmaceutical/medical container companies, application developers, and public and private cost bearers for the introduction of this solution. This solution is scheduled to be unveiled for the first time at the AIPIA World Congress 2015, held in Utrecht, Netherlands, on November 18-19.
