KT announced that it has established 'GiGA Office' at Ewha Womans University, providing total ICT solutions for the first time at a domestic university.

'Giga Office' is a total ICT solution that connects a customer's office to an adjacent KT branch via Giga LAN to provide services necessary for overall ICT operations, such as internet access, equipment hosting, security, and integrated control solutions. Since November 2014, it has provided ICT infrastructure primarily to small and medium-sized enterprises and startups, serving 1,200 companies to date, and this marks the first time Giga Office has been introduced to a university.

The Giga Office established by KT at Ewha Womans University is characterized by its connection to a Hyper Server, which provides integrated consulting, migration, monitoring, and operation services for customers' servers using virtualization technology. The Hyper Server connected to the Giga Office allows for the creation of virtual machines (VMs) without any limit on the number of units and offers 1Gbps internet bandwidth and LAN bandwidth of up to 10Gbps. Furthermore, since it can be managed via the web even without dedicated cloud operations personnel on-site, it can improve work efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

In order for universities to provide students with a cloud practice environment, it was inevitable to pay for excessive equipment investment and network costs, but it is expected that these cost and operational issues will be resolved through the introduction of 'Giga Office'.

Establish a stable practice environment with '1 VM per person' for computer science class practicals

Ewha Womans University plans to apply 'Giga Office' first to the Department of Computer Science and implement a '1 VM (Virtual Machine) per student' policy for computer science practical training. Accordingly, students will be allocated a dedicated VM upon admission and will be able to engage in various programming practices and development within a stable cloud environment until graduation.

Chae Ki-joon, Dean of the College of Engineering at Ewha Womans University, stated, “The establishment of a stable cloud practice environment within the department will serve as a major cornerstone for enhancing students’ IT skills and spreading a culture of voluntary software creation,” and revealed plans to expand this initiative to the entire College of Engineering based on the precedent set by the Department of Computer Engineering.

Lee Sun-woo, Head of KT’s Corporate Solutions Division, stated, “GiGA Office, which achieved 1,200 corporate customers within one year of its launch in 2015, is now expanding its reach to university campuses. We expect it to contribute significantly to enhancing the ICT capabilities of domestic universities by providing KT’s unique differentiated value of gigabit-class dedicated lines and cloud environments.”
